Are you free to chat for a minute?

If you are still reading, then you are probably free to do whatever you want to do.

For the most part, anyway.

Which is probably why we don’t think about freedom very often – except when July 4th rolls around.

If we were slaves, we might think about freedom all the time, right?

Well, here’s a news flash …

John 8:34 (ESV): Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.

Oh.

Did you react like the Jews?

John 8:33 (ESV): They answered him [Jesus], “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”

These folks just didn’t get it. They didn’t even realize they were slaves!

Do we?

We need to know it. Know the truth.

We need to know the Truth.

John 14:6 (ESV): Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Jesus Himself is the Truth who sets us free from slavery to sin.

Romans 6:6 (ESV): We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Are you a slave?

Romans 6:16 (CSB): Don’t you know that if you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of that one you obey—either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness?

Yes, we are all slaves – of what we obey.

But, the good news is … we can be free anyway!

John 8:35-36 (NLT): A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

We can be a son – a permanent member of the family.

A true disciple.

John 8:31-32 (ESV): “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

A true disciple abides in His Word.

What does that mean exactly? Let’s look that up in a Parallel Bible …

NASB – Continue in My word.

NIV – Hold to my teaching.

NLT – Remain faithful to my teachings.

In other words, spend time in the Bible so we’ll know how to be faithful and obedient.

Staying in the Word is key.

As we abide in His word, our desire to surrender to obedience will grow.

Romans 6:17-18 (ESV): But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

So I’ll ask again – are you a slave?

To sin or righteousness?

Now that we know we’re all slaves, let’s think – and talk – about freedom more often than just the 4th of July!

Romans 6:22-23 (NLT): But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
