Is it a big deal if we skip our Bible reading today? Of course we know what the answer should be. But the truth is, our answer depends on how much we value the 14 things below.

Today we’re talking about a shared struggle for many of us – spending daily time in God’s Word.

It’s the daily part that’s hard, right? In fact, statistics show that less than a third of Protestant churchgoers read their Bible everyday.

Did God really intend for us to read His Word every single day?

Acts 17:11 (NASB): Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

Deuteronomy 17:18-19 (ESV): “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them,

Side note: I can’t zoom by that verse without pointing out the Scripture writing! But that’s another post. {grin}

I think God built us to need His “manna” every day. So what can we do if we struggle with spending daily time in His Word?

  • Pray!

Luke 18:1 (CSB): Now he told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not give up.

  • Keep trying.

2 Chronicles 15:7 (CSB): But as for you, be strong; don’t give up, for your work has a reward.”

  • Don’t give up.

Because you don’t want to miss the reward!

Yes, there are perks! In fact, the benefits are many!

Wait a minute. Hold on.

Are you thinking: Hey, we aren’t supposed to read the Bible to get a reward! Aren’t we supposed to read it because we want to grow closer to Jesus?

Yep! You are so right!

John 5:39 (NLT): “You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me!

It’s all about Him.

Motives are important. He definitely sees the heart. But He also tells us in His Word to start reading before the desire comes.

Jeremiah 15:16a (ESV): Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart,

So maybe God spelled out the rewards in the Psalms to entice us into the “found” stage and keep us in the “eat them” stage – and then the desire/motive would follow.

See if these 14 rewards entice you at all. I’m pretty sure they will!

BUT …

If your day might need a dose of peace, reviving, direction, or strength, then don’t dare miss your Bible reading!

That would be every day, right?

Skip something else (social media? tv?), but not your Bible reading.

These rewards are too valuable.

And one last thing: don’t waste your time searching for any of those 14 anywhere else.

James 1:25 (CSB): But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who works – this person will be blessed in what he does.
