Why Did We Include the Doxology In Our Lord’s Prayer Printable?

The Lord’s Prayer is found in both Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. But did you realize that the ending (aka the doxology) of the prayer is not in most Bibles?

It’s true.

We checked several Bible versions and most of them don’t mention the last sentence. But the NASB 1995 Bible includes the doxology in brackets with this footnote: “This clause not found in earlier manuscripts.”

So we did some research on the reason why and the answer would require a whole separate post, but we came to the conclusion that we personally don’t mind adding the doxology to the prayer when we pray.

Why? Because it is most definitely biblical.

The doxology may not be in Matthew or Luke, but you will find it in over 18 similar verses. We counted.

Here are a few to give you an idea …

(Note: the first verse is where most scholars believe the Lord’s Prayer doxology was derived.)

1 Chronicles 29:11 (ESV): Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

Exodus 15:18 (ESV): The LORD will reign forever and ever.”

1 Timothy 1:17 (ESV): To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Romans 11:36 (ESV): For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

Revelation 5:13 (ESV): And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

Since it is undeniably biblical to give praise and glory to God at the beginning and end of a prayer, we chose to use the NASB 1995 version which includes the doxology for today’s wall art printable.

Write Prayer On My Heart

We have spent the last year studying all the prayers in the Bible – and we mean all.

Now we can’t WAIT for you to join us and get charged up like we did when learning all about the prayers prayed during Bible times!

We chose our favorite 365 Bible prayers and compiled them into one place.

Which brings us to our announcement …

Our newest Scripture Writing 365 Journal will debut in November 2022.

It will be titled: Write Prayer On My Heart.

And that will also be the goal.

This will be our 7th journal – and we’ve never been this excited!

There’s something about the number seven, isn’t there? {grin}

In this upcoming journal, we will take a look at 365 prayers found in both the Old and New Testaments.

It will not be like typical prayer journals where you write your own prayers.

This one will be observing and studying the prayers of other people found in the Bible.

Also, no commentary will be included. When completed, your journal will be ALL Bible.

Your prayer life will be forever changed (ask us how we know) when you ask the questions in the journal and realize how the answers fit together in the big picture of the entire Bible …

How long was the prayer?
What exactly was said?
How long did it take for them to receive an answer?
What attitude did they have before and during prayer?
What happened next?
What else did you observe about the prayer?

Has prayer changed since Bible times?

If the Disciples Needed It …

In the Luke 11 version of the Lord’s Prayer, the disciples asked this first …

Luke 11:1 (ESV): Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

“Lord, teach us to pray.”

If the disciples realized their need to be taught how to pray after they had already been living in-person with Jesus, then how much more do we!

That need is why we have compiled 365 Bible verses about prayer. There are many more than that by the way – in fact, we had a hard time narrowing down which prayers to include. That frequency throughout the entire Bible shows the importance placed on prayer.

We were made for relationship with God.

You can’t have a relationship without communication.

If you’ve ever pondered what your relationship with God should look like, you will eat up this study on prayer.

We will observe how real people in the Bible – just like us – modeled it. We’ll even look at some prayers that weren’t accepted – and why.

God has given us all the examples we could possibly want!

Let’s compile them together in one journal. Imagine how helpful that will be!

Let’s write down the Scripture, observe what was said, how it was said, what happened and what didn’t happen and let the Lord open our eyes to see how He wants us to pray.
