Some of the most beloved miracles in Scripture are when the Old Testament recounts the times the Lord gave specific instructions to let Him fight the battle.

For example, today’s hand-lettered verse is what Moses said right before God parted the Red Sea.

Exodus 14:14 (ESV): The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.

Today we will be discussing the Top 5 “The Lord Will Fight For You” verses.

Here are the other four …

Deuteronomy 1:30 (ESV): The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

Deuteronomy 3:22 (ESV): You shall not fear them, for it is the Lord your God who fights for you.’

Deuteronomy 20:4 (ESV): For the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’

2 Chronicles 20:17 (ESV): You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.”

Reading these verses brings to mind one big question.

Are we supposed to sit back and do nothing?

All the control freaks are thinking: that would be really hard to do.

All the couch potatoes are thinking: now we’re talking! {grin}

But there’s more!

Exodus 14:14 - The Lord will fight for you.

I read each of these verses in their context in my parallel Bible, and I found two common threads in all of them – and it wasn’t to sit back and do nothing!

I repeat – it wasn’t to sit back and do nothing.

So what did it say to do?

Here, I’ll show you … allow me to add some context to each of those 5 verses and highlight the common threads.

The Lord Will Fight For You – Verse 1

Exodus 14:13-16 (ESV): And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.

The people were told to fear not and to be silent, but in the very next breath they were told to go forward. So the reason for being silent was probably so they would listen for God’s instructions, not to just sit and watch.

Because He clearly told them to go.

And I found the same thing in all 5 verses. Take a look …

The Lord Will Fight For You – Verse 2

Deuteronomy 1:26, 29-30 (ESV): “Yet you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. […] Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread or afraid of them. The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,

The Lord Will Fight For You – Verse 3

Deuteronomy 3:21-22 (ESV): And I commanded Joshua at that time, ‘Your eyes have seen all that the Lord your God has done to these two kings. So will the Lord do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing. You shall not fear them, for it is the Lord your God who fights for you.’

The Lord Will Fight For You – Verse 4

Deuteronomy 20:1, 4 (ESV): “When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. […] For the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’

The Lord Will Fight For You – Verse 5

2 Chronicles 20:17 (ESV): You will not need to fight in this battle. Stand firm, hold your position, and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah and Jerusalem.’ Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Tomorrow go out against them, and the Lord will be with you.”

Did you see common threads like I did?

The people had a role – instructions to obey – every time!

So that takes us back to our original question …

What is our role when God fights our battles?

Here’s what we found:

1} Be silent and listen.

2} Obey His instructions.

3} Do not be afraid.

I purposely put them in that order because I think listening is the most important one.

Why?

Because obedience and courage don’t just come by sheer will. They come as we grow more like Jesus, which comes from spending time abiding in Him. Listening to Him.

Key word: time.

Listening involves time in prayer and God’s Word.

And since some of the battles appear suddenly, we better spend the time every day – so we’ll be ready.

The more time we put into abiding with God, the easier obedience and courage will come.

If we want courage and obedience to become our default response, we need to hang around the One who changes hearts.

The battles will come. And the Lord will fight for us. May we NOT be found sitting around doing nothing.

May we be found ready and willing to obey!

Ready to start working on that courage and obedience – all while abiding with God?

*My prayer for you is … that this blog will inspire you to open your Bible every single day to seek God’s face and write His Word on your heart – because HE’S the key to lasting heart change!
